ASUS Announces Intel Haswell-based Chromebox for US$179

ASUS has just announced its Chromebox for US$179. It is powered by an Intel Haswell-based processor, and bears a strong resemblance to Intel’s Next Unit of Computing (NUC) device.

The specifications of the ASUS Chromebox are as follows:-

  • Processor: Intel Celeron, Core i3 or Core i7 (Haswell)
  • Memory: 2 or 4 GB DDR3 RAM; 2 x SO-DIMM slots
  • Storage: 16 GB SSD; 100 GB of Google Drive storage for 2 years
  • LAN: 10/100/1000Mbps Ethernet
  • Wireless Connectivity: Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0
  • External I/O: SD card reader, 4 x USB 3.0 ports, HDMI, DisplayPort port, and audio jack
  • Dimensions: 124mm x 124mm x 42mm

ASUS isn’t the first to market with a Chrome OS desktop device; there is a Samsung Chromebox that is priced higher at US$329, but it appears the latter has lower specifications, as the ASUS Chromebox can feature a more powerful, dual-core Intel Core i7-4600U processor. Seen at the CES this year, LG was supposedly the first manufacturer to unveil an all-in-one PC, running on Chrome OS. As observed by ChromeSpot, the Intel Core i3 and i7 processors may be underutilized unless the user wants to opt for a dual-boot operating environment of Chrome OS and Ubuntu. The ASUS Chromebox is slated to ship in March this year.
