Apple's iPhone 7 may eliminate 3.5mm audio jack to make it thinner

Apple could be facing much backlash from users if it goes ahead with plans to remove the 3.5mm headphone jack.

According to Japanese blog Macotakara, a reliable source claims that Apple is replacing the 3.5mm headphone jack with a Lightning jack so as to achieve "more than 1mm" reduction in thickness on the iPhone 7 compared to the iPhone 6s. If that comes to pass, users have to connect earphones via Lightning or Bluetooth.

To make the transition easier for users, Apple is said to be bundling Lightning connector-equipped EarPods with the next generation iPhone . For those who are well versed in specifications of Apple's products, you'll note that its iPod Touch is 1mm thinner than the iPhone 6s despite having a 3.5mm audio output jack; the phone probably has more components that make it a tad thicker. If and when Apple actually replaces the 3.5mm headphone jack, users who have invested in an expensive pair of wired headphones are likely to be unhappy unless they offer a converter to maintain compatibility. Still, it's a bit of an inconvenience.

Is it really necessary for Apple to make their phones any thinner?
