A week or so ago, mysterious Apple-leased vehicles were spotted roaming the streets of North California. It was laden with all sorts of cameras and sensors. This has led to speculation about Apple is planning to do.

Presently, it is believed that Apple is working one of either two things or in fact a combination of both. On one hand, some have said that Apple is in fact working on building its own electric car. A report quoted an Apple employee familiar with the project said that "Apple's latest project is too exciting to pass up. I think it will change the landscape and give Tesla a run for its money." Additionally, it is also said that employees from Tesla are jumping ship to join Apple because of this project.

The other thing that Apple could be working on is a self-driving system. A source from the automotive industry said that Apple is primarily focused on the "software game" and said that there is a big money to be made from developing a software operating system for self-driving cars. This makes sense as Apple has no experience developing or building cars. Even so, with Apple reaping record profits and with cash reserves said to be in excess of US$150 billion, is it so far-fetched to think that Apple could in fact be making its own cars?

One thing is clear, however, Apple is serious about making some sort of in-roads into the automotive industry. It has hired many executives from the automotive industry including former Mercedes-Benz R&D head Johann Jungwirth.
