The Apple Watch Series 3 may use a different display technology
Apple may be switching to a new display technology for the Apple Watch Series 3.
Citing information from industry sources, DigiTimes claims that TPK Holding - the current supplier of TOL touch panels for Series 2 - has issues with yield rates due to the curved surface of the Apple Watch display which complicate the manufacturing process. As a result, it has given up producing the TOL touch panels for Apple and shift its focus to 3D sensor-based touch panels for smartphones with OLED displays.
This resulted in Apple sourcing a new display technology, G/F touch solution from Taiwan-based General Interface Solution or Hong Kong-based Biel Crystal Manufactory. Shipments are said to begin in the second half of the year.
