Apple Watch Series 2: Same design, better build

Apple unveiled its second-generation smartwatch today: the Apple Watch Series 2. The device has the same design as its predecessor with a square, customizable watch face available in either 38mm or 42mm, and a digital crown for scrolling and zooming. However, the watch now sports a new water-resistant shell, which makes it swimproof up to 50 meters. It also has a new built-in GPS chip.

The built-in GPS allows the device to perform mapping on its own, so you no longer need your iPhone with you when you go out for a run.

Apple has also upgraded the processor in the Watch Series 2. It now sports a dual-core processor that Apple says is 50 percent faster than its predecessor, with double the graphics performance thanks to a new GPU. The display has also been upgraded, and is now 50 percent brighter.

Like the original Apple Watch, the Series 2 version will be available in an entry-level aluminum case, as well as a more expensive stainless steel case. Apple is also introducing a new, even more premium , which will start at an eye-popping S$1,818.

The ceramic Apple Watch Series 2 is luxurious but really expensive.

Apple has also released a new special Nike+ version of the Apple Watch. It looks a bit like a mix of Nike's old FuelBand fitness tracker and the Apple Watch, with sporty holes in the band. The Nike+ Apple Watch will cost S$548 for the 38mm version and $588 for the 42mm version. The Nike+ Apple Watch will be available in late October.

The original Apple Watch will still be available for sale, and is being rebranded as Series 1. It has gotten a price cut, and will now start at just S$398. It will also come with the upgraded S2 dual-core processor.

Preorders for the Apple Watch Series 2 start on September 9th.
