Apple Watch 2 to use "one glass solution" display?
While there is likely to be no hardware refresh for the Apple Watch 2, the iPhone maker is expected to use a new display technology for the next generation smartwatch.
According to DigiTimes, touch panel maker TPK Holding revealed during an investor conference that Apple will shift from a Glass on Glass (G/G) technology to the "One Glass Solution" (OGS) technology for the next smartwatch. OGS technology is said to eliminate one of the layers of glass from the conventional G/G display and replace it with a thinner one.
The benefits of making this switch include saving a small amount of internal space and reducing the weight of the smartwatch. As promising as it sounds, TPK Holding claims that yield rates for the OGS touch panels are lower than expected due to technological difficulties.
Apple could launch the Apple Watch 2 in September alongside the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus or later in October.
