Artificial intelligence (AI) seems to be the next big thing for Apple to venture as it acquired another company which develops AI technologies to read people's emotions.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Apple has confirmed that it has acquired a San Diego startup, Emotient. The company is working on AI technology which analyses facial expressions to read emotions. As usual, Apple declined to comment on the aim of the acquisition.

The acquisition can spawn many new features for Apple. For example, Emotient's technology can be used to improve the search function on the Photos app of its devices. It can also be used by Siri to search through photos based on happy moments.

In October 2015, Apple bought two AI firms - Perceptio and VocalIQ. The former specializes in technologies that allows advanced artificial systems to run on smartphones without needing or sharing as much data. The latter specializes in natural language processing and can be used to boost Siri's capabilities.
