Apple supplier Dialog invests in wireless charging firm Energous

Energous has been rumored to be working with Apple on wireless charging technology. Regulatory fillings in 2014 revealed that Energous' WattUp reference design - a wireless charging technology that uses radio frequencies to charge devices from up to 15 feet away - were undergoing compliance testing at Apple.

Unfortunately, the young company is too small to be a viable supplier for Apple. However, a recent S$10 million investment from Apple supplier Dialog Semiconductor could turn things around for Energous. By accepting the investment, Energous will be transferring its entire silicon operations to Dialog.

"We’re actually transferring all of our silicon operations to Dialog," says Energous CEO Steve Rizzone. "All the Energous technology will be sold under the Dialog branding and all sales orders will be going through Dialog. It’ll take us about 90 days to do all that," Rizzone said.

The partnership between Energous and Dialog would open up many doors for the former; it can leverage Dialog's extensive supply chain, relationship and experience to seal business deals with Apple especially when the iPhone maker is rumored to be introducing wireless charging next year. Foxconn is also said to be testing wireless charging modules for use in the next iPhone.
