Apple still dominates the global smartwatch market

Despite their more expensive price tags, Apple Watch models continued to dominate the global smartwatch market from May to July 2016.

According to the latest data from research firm Kantar Worldpanel, Apple captured 33.5% of the U.S smartwatch market. It also garnered 31.8% market share in Germany, France, Italy and Great Britain, which are Europe's biggest four markets.

“In the three months ending July 2016, 47% of wearable sales in the U.S. occurred in the smartwatch category, versus the more basic fitness bands,” cited Lauren Guenveur, consumer insight director at Kantar Worldpanel, in a statement. “Apple continues to dominate this segment.”

However, the global smartwatch market is not growing as fast as it was expected to. Only 4.7% of Americans and 3.2% of people living in Europe's four biggest markets currently own a smartwatch. There is reportedly no indication of rapid adoption in the near future.

Kantar Worldpanel's latest estimates echo the same sentiments as IDC's July report; Apple was still the runaway leader in smartwatch shipments for Q2 2016, but shipments of smartwatches dropped for the first time since the research firm started tracking these devices.

Apple recently unveiled the Apple Watch Series 2, which comes with a more powerful processor, built-in GPS and better water resistance. It also dropped the price for the first generation Apple Watch. These strategic moves could potentially help Apple maintain its lead in the market for the next few quarters.
