Apple just set a new record for its weekend sales of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus; over 10 million units were sold in just three days after the global launch on September 19.

According to Apple, the sales number exceeded its expectations and shattered all its previous sell-through records by a large margin. As usual, Apple did not break down the individual sales of the respective iPhone 6 models. For comparison's sake, Apple sold 9 million units of the iPhone 5S and 5C last year.

We reckon the sales number this year could be higher if not for the delay in launch for the new iPhone 6 models in China, which is the world's largest consumer market. Apple could not launch the iPhone 6 models in China as it is still waiting for a network license to be granted from the Chinese regulators.

The new iPhone 6 models got a good start in the first 24 hours of their availability by garnering 4 million pre-orders, which is double the amount it had for the iPhone 5 pre-order two years ago.

Apple will roll out the iPhone 6 models to 20 more countries this Friday, September 26 and aims to have them in 115 countries by the end of the year.
