Apple said to be working with LG on a 3D camera for the next iPhone
Apple is reportedly working with LG Innotek on bringing 3D camera modules to its next generation iPhone.
According to The Korean Economic Daily, both companies are developing a smartphone camera module with 3D photographing. Sources close to the project claim that Apple is looking at ways to integrate its 3D technology into LG Innotek's 3D camera module and related technology.
In the past few years, Apple has been acquiring companies for their 3D technologies. It bought PrimeSense for US$360 million in 2013 which specializes in 3D sensing technology that spans across TV, mobile, PC and laptop, interactive displays and healthcare. A year later, it acquired Israeli camera technology firm LinX for US$20 million. LinX develops multi-aperture camera technology and its cameras use multiple sensors to capture 2D and 3D images.
For LG Innotek, it is currently the exclusive supplier of the dual-camera module for the iPhone 7 Plus. The company also develops its camera modules, which includes the 16-megapixel f/1.8 sensor for the LG G4 smartphone.
