Apple rumored to be working on new Thunderbolt Display with integrated graphics

Last week, we reported that Apple will be discontinuing its Thunderbolt Display.

The current Thunderbolt Display outputs a resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels and is widely regarded to be the best display you can get for your Mac, thanks to its great offering of ports.

However, its resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels doesn't quite cut it anymore in today's ultra high definition world, especially in the face of today's iMacs which have 4K and 5K displays.

Word on the street is that the next display from Apple will feature either 4K or 5K display. However, the 5K display will be problematic because there isn't a single interface that would allow devices to output to a 5K display over a single cable.

The workaround to this problem is apparently quite simple: give the display an integrated GPU.

According to Paczkowski, an editor at Buzzfeed, sources tell him that the next generation Thunderbolt Display will indeed have an integrated GPU.

The integrated GPU will undoubtedly add to cost, but it would allow any Mac device to work with it. In addition, the integrated GPU will also give better graphics performance.

No word yet on any other features, but we would expect the new display to feature some sort of support for USB Type-C.

There's also no indication on when the new monitor would launch, but if we were to hazard a guess, we would say that it will launch alongside the rumored new MacBook Pros.
