Apple Rumored to be Working on "Mainstream" Smart Home Devices

It is no secret that Apple is working furiously behind the scenes to uncover the next big thing. This is not only what the company is good at, but also because it is anticipating a slowdown in the sales of its smartphones and tablets. And previously, we reported that Apple could possibly be looking at the automobile and also healthcare industry.

Now, following WWDC, the latest rumors are suggesting that Apple is actually looking and quite literally looking at sometime else closer to home. With Apple's announcement of its new HomeKit API, a platform that ties smart home devices such as locks, thermostats, security cameras, switches together, it is suggested that Apple could actually be looking at creating other smart home devices that will integrate with existing Apple products.

Reports indicate that Apple are "beyond the exploratory phase of development", but they do not say exactly what type of product Apple is working on, only to say that it is a device that will see "mainstream" usage and that it is unlikely that it will be a product that will compete directly with Google's Nest.

Given Apple's recent acquisition of Beats and the HomeKit API, Apple could very well be planning on advanced speaker systems for homes or smart home control panels.

All things considered, these rumors do make sense as Apple already has an array of products that people use on a daily basis around their homes - iMacs, MacBooks, iPhones and iPads - and a smart home device that ties all this devices together or is able to make use of these devices will likely be well received by families that have already invested heavily in Apple hardware.
