According to reports from Korea, Apple has turned to Samsung to manufacture its new A9 SoC, which will presumably be employed in the next generation iPhones and iPads. Additionally, it is also believed that manufacturing of these new chips has began at Samsung's plant in Austin, Texas.

Presently, the A8 and A8X SoC used in the iPhone 6, iPhone 6S and the iPad Air 2 are mostly manufactured by TSMC, who is responsible for around 60% of the orders. However, Apple is said to be favoring Samsung for its new A9 SoC because Samsung is the only viable partner with a 14nm manufacturing process. Some even believe that the A9 SoC could be manufactured by Samsung alone as TSMC has only demonstrated a 16nm manufacturing process. A smaller manufacturing process typically means better power characteristics and performance.

Dr. Kim, the president of Samsung's semiconductor business, also said that Samsung's profits will improve once it begins supplying Apple with processors from its 14nm line.
