Apple posts record quarter with sales of Apple Watch exceeding US$1 billion
Apple has just announced that it has had a record breaking third quarter, thanks to strong performances from the iPhone and also the introduction of the Apple Watch.
According to the report released by Apple, the company enjoyed US$49.6 billion in revenue with a net profit of US$10.7 billion. This is up from US$37.4 billion and US$7.7 billion respectively from the quarter a year ago.
Apple's CEO Tim Cook said, "We had an amazing quarter, with iPhone revenue up 59 percent over last year, strong sales of Mac, all-time record revenue from services, driven by the App Store, and a great start for Apple Watch."
This stellar performance was made possible thanks to strong growth and record third quarter sales of the iPhone and Mac. Apple sold around 47 million iPhones and 4.7 million Macs in the past quarter.
Apple did not disclose how many Apple Watches were sold, but numerous reports have said that Apple has likely sold around 4 million Apple Watches since its launch. Extrapolating using other data, reports are suggesting that sales of Apple Watch exceeded US$1 billion. This would easily make the Apple Watch the bestselling smart watch of the past quarter.
All these encouraging news aside, sales of iPads continue to dip. Apple sold 10.9 million iPads in the past quarter, but in the same quarter from a year ago, they sold over 13 million iPads.
