Apple may ditch the Lightning port for USB-C on the next iPhone
The physical Touch ID button is not the only feature which is rumored to be ditched on the next iPhone. The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reports that the next iPhone may feature a “USB-C port for the power cord and other peripheral devices instead of the company’s original Lightning connector.”
However, it's unclear from the WSJ report whether Apple is really ditching its proprietary Lightning port or just incorporating the USB Type-C into its power adapters for use with the MacBook and MacBook Pros. Moreover, Apple's rumored plans for the Ultra Accessory Connector suggest that the Lightning port is not going away anytime soon.
The last port change for the iPhone was five years ago when the 30-pin dock connector was replaced with the Lightning port on the iPhone 5. If Apple is really ditching the Lightning port on the next iPhone, we reckon that the consumer backlash could be worse than the elimination of the 3.5mm headphone jack on the iPhone 7.
