Apple may be bringing the digital crown to the iPhone and iPad
When Apple launched the Apple Watch in September 2014, the digital crown was touted as the "most revolutionary navigation tool since the iPod's Click Wheel and iPhone's Multi-Touch. Well, it seems that Apple has plans to bring the digital crown mechanism to the iPhone and iPad.
Patently Apple found out that the iPhone maker had filed a patent application for a rotary input mechanism which can be used as a volume controller, locking the screen, turning on the screen, snapping a photo and resizing text. In addition, the patent application describes a usage scenario where the iOS device may not have a bezel and sport only a touch-screen surface. What this means is that Apple could be looking at bezel-free iPhones and iPads in future!
On the Apple Watch, the digital crown is used for several purposes such as scrolling through lists, zoom into things, accessing the app home screen, and bringing you back to the watch face. Will Apple implement the digital crown on the iPhone and iPad? Only time will tell.
