Apple to introduce iPhones with flexible OLED displays by 2018?

LG is one of the few companies that's committed in flexible OLED display research and production. Seen here is the 5.5-inch LG G Flex 2.

Besides the possibility of removing the physical home button and using a new material to mask the antenna lines on the iPhones, Apple may be considering to use flexible OLED displays.

According to Business Korea, major Korean display manufacturers are pitching to Apple to adopt flexible OLED display panels for its iPhone lineup. An industry source claims that Apple is "serious" about using OLED displays for its iPhones as it wants to improve color saturation, accuracy and brightness.

Business Korea - “It is very likely that the first flexible iPhone may be introduced in 2018, as Apple's top-tier display suppliers are working on it,” the source said.

Apple currently uses flexible OLED displays for the Apple Watch which are supplied by LG Display. Therefore, it's likely that Apple will make the transition towards OLED displays some point in the future for its iPhones. The Cupertino company is also considered late in the game as rival phone makers are already making phones with flexible or curved displays.

For example, LG has two generations of smartphones - the G Flex and G Flex 2 - with a curved display and has been mass producing flexible OLED smartphone displays since late 2013. Samsung has made more devices with flexible or curved displays; it has three smartphones - the Galaxy Round, the Galaxy Note Edge and the Galaxy S6 Edge - with curved displays and wearables such as the Gear Fit and Gear S.
