Last Friday, a federal appeals court reinstated a US$120 million (S$164.75 million) jury award in favor of Apple over Samsung.

The decision was made by a full panel of judges on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in Washington, D.C., with 8-3 in favor of Apple. The judges said that the previous panel from the same court should not have overturned the original verdict last February.

The court said that there was substantial evidence for the original May 2014 jury verdict. It was about Samsung’s infringement of Apple’s slide-to-unlock functionality, autocorrect features, and quick links – the ability to turn dates, phone numbers, and addresses into usable links in messages. To reinstate the award, the three-judge panel examined evidence outside of the case’s records.

Samsung was to pay Apple US$119.6 million for using the latter’s features without permission. The infringement on the quick links feature accounted for US$99 million of the damages. Going the other way round, Apple had to pay US$158,400 in damages to Samsung for infringing on their digital photo technology patent – the same decision last Friday upheld this award.

Last December, Samsung had to pay another US$542 million award for another patent case. An appeal for a part of that dispute has gone up to the U.S. Supreme Court, and that appeal will be heard on Tuesday this week.

The US$120 million case is Apple Inc v. Samsung Electronics Co Ltd et al, in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, No. 15-1171.
