In case you missed it, Apple launched a free battery replacement program for some iPhone 6s devices which may shut down unexpectedly. Now, the iPhone maker shares more information on what actually went wrong with these devices.

Apparently, the "very small number of iPhone 6s devices" made between September and October 2015 had a battery component which was exposed to controlled ambient air longer than it should have been before being assembled into battery packs. This caused the battery to degrade faster and lead to unexpected shutdowns.

Apple reiterates that "this is not a safety issue" as the iPhone is designed to shut down automatically under certain conditions such as extremely cold temperature". The shut down may be an annoyance for the users, but they are designed to protect the device's electronics from low voltage.

If you're unsure whether your iPhone 6s is affected, you can key in the serial number of your device on Apple's Support Page to see if it is covered under the program.
