Apple to debut 12MP sensor, 4K video recording and flash for selfies for new iPhones?

Apple is expected to upgrade the imaging hardware of its new iPhones.

Apple has made several upgrades to the camera system of its iPhones over the past few years, but this year would be a major one according to 9to5Mac.

Quoting information provided by sources, 9to5Mac reports that new camera hardware will be a major focus of the new iPhones. First, Apple will upgrade the current 8-megapixel sensor to 12-megapixel. Coupled with the new image signal processor that comes with the upcoming A9 processor, the 12-megapixel camera sensor will take higher quality photos without looking washed out.

In addition, the new iPhones will support 4K video recording and have new FaceTime cameras for better video calls or selfies. Apple reportedly will add front-flash support by lighting up a quick white screen when the shutter button is pressed. Front-facing panorama shots and slow motion 720p video recording are said to be in the works as well.

This isn't the first time we are hearing about improved imaging hardware on the new iPhones. Business Insider reported a few days ago a source within Apple's supply chain claimed that the new iPhones will sport bigger image sensors with five-element lenses. A leaked internal document from Foxconn in July also revealed that the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus will come with 12-megapixel rear and 5-megapixel front-facing cameras.

Apple has sent out invites for an event on 9th September where it is expected to launch the new iPhones. Retail availability is said to be on the 18th September.
