Japanese Prime Minister Abe Shinzo recently revealed Apple's plans for a major new technical center in Japan as he spoke in a campaign speech outside of Tokyo.

Shinzo reportedly said, " Apple has decided to undertake cutting-edge R&D in Japan. It will be formally announced soon." He also added that the new R&D center will be Apple's largest in region. These statements were made ahead of a general election on Sunday.

An Apple spokesperson from London confirmed this and said that the new R&D center will be located in Yokohama and will lead to the creation of "dozens of new jobs." He also clarified that technical centers are typically responsible for new processes, rather than designing actual products. Product R&D continues to be conducted in Apple's headquarters in Cupertino.

Apple has been pouring lots of money into R&D and refining its processes. In the last quarter alone, Apple is estimated to have poured a whopping US$1.68 billion into R&D and spent over US$6 billion in the past year alone. Apple is estimated to have a war chest in excess of US$160 billion.
