Apple just confirmed that it has acquired Israel company PrimeSense for about US$360 million.

According to AllThingsD, Apple spokeswoman Kristin Huguet confirmed the deal in a statement. Both companies were reported to be in talks for months, but hit a road block on end-game issues such as liquidity preferences.

PrimeSense's 3D technology became well-known after it worked with Microsoft on its Kinect gaming device which uses cameras and depth sensors to capture users' motions and integrate them into XBox.

According to PrimeSense's website, the company also develops 3D sensing technology that gives digital devices the ability to observe a scene in three dimensions. Its current markets span across various categories such as TV, mobile, PC and laptop, interactive displays and healthcare.

One particular product of the company, Capri, may be what Apple has been eyeing for in this acquisition. Dubbed "the smallest and most robust 3D sensor available", the Capri sensor can be embedded directly into smartphones and tablets, giving these devices features such as augmented reality gaming, virtual shopping, 3D scanning and photography enhancement.

It is possible that Apple will integrate PrimeSense's 3D technology into its current and future product categories, which include the iPads, iPhones, the rumored Apple iTV and iWatch.
