The way people consume media content has changed drastically as the masses adopt smart devices such as tablets and smartphones. With the new distribution channels and avenues available to artists, they have been exploring new ways of bringing their work to audiences.
The Oscar nominations for 2012 have been released and it is heartening to see application makers Moonbot Studios being nominated in the Best Animated Short category for The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore. While the animated short film was released through conventional means, it can be purchased and viewed by iPad owners in the form of an application as well.
The creators have dubbed The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore a "story app", and when you think about it, tablets as a medium for film can add the tactile component along with the aural and visual. The extra layer of immersion makes them suited for establishing stronger connections between the viewer and the subject matter. Perhaps if artists explore the medium enough, future Oscars would have a stand alone category for applications by itself.
