Another report is certain the iPhone 8 will have an optical fingerprint sensor

The Chinese publication Economic Daily News (EDN) believes strongly that the iPhone 8 would come with an optical fingerprint sensor.

Citing sources from Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), EDN claims the iPhone 8 will do away with the physical Touch ID button and use an optical fingerprint sensor to authenticate directly on the display. The display will also adopt a new aspect ratio of 18:5:9. In addition, EDN heard that there would be invisible infrared image sensors to improve the functionality of the camera and support augmented reality (AR) apps.

There are already numerous reports supporting the notion of an optical fingerprint sensor. DigiTimes claimed in June 2015 that Apple was working on touch and display driver integration (TDDI) single-chip solutions which could integrate fingerprint sensor with a virtual home button on the iPhone.

The following year, Bloomberg said that the home button would be eliminated. In the same year, Apple was granted a third patent for an embedded Touch ID sensor in the display.  The iPhone maker was granted another patent titled "Touch ID under the Display" earlier this year.

KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo wrote in an investor note a few months ago that the iPhone 8 would have a "function area" at the bottom of the screen, which simply suggested the shift to a virtual home button. Purported schematics and concept renders of the iPhone 8 also hint a Touch ID button integrated with the display.
