NVIDIA has announced that Android 6.0 Marshmallow will be available on its 8-inch Shield K1 gaming tablet with immediate effect, making it among the first devices to receive Android 6.0 Marshmallow, starting immediately. It only recently re-launched the Shield K1 tablet in November at a lower price of US$200, but the tablet’s support for Android 6.0 makes good on NVIDIA’s claim that it would be one of the first to offer Google’s latest Android operating system.

Android 6.0 first debuted on Google’s Nexus 5X and 6P smartphones a few months back, but as is typical, few other manufacturers have rolled out updates yet (although ASUS, Sony, and Motorola are among those who have released lists of their devices that will get Marshmallow).

As a result, the Shield Tablet K1 is among the first products outside of Google’s Nexus phones to receive Android 6.0, which includes new features like Google’s Now on Tap, adoptable storage for integrating microSD cards with your internal storage, and app standby for improved battery savings.

On top of that, NVIDIA is also pushing out upgrades on its end in the form of a new camera app and user interface improvements. The updated camera app will feature a Material Design-inspired user interface and include a better burst photo functionality and new real-time HD image effects, accelerated by the Tegra K1 processor's Kepler GPU.

NVIDIA has also added the ability to personalize the tablet’s Home and Lock screens with custom wallpapers, including new ones from NVIDIA. In addition, it’s now possible to launch Google Now voice commands straight from the lock screen. Finally, NVIDIA also said that the Quick Setting menu now supports the adding, removing, and rearranging of toggles, so you should be able to place your most frequently accessed settings right where you need them.
