AMD’s new Crimson Edition driver causing fan speed issues for certain users

AMD’s new Radeon Software Crimson Edition driver went live only early last week, and reports have already emerged that the driver is causing issues with graphics card fan speeds for a handful of users.

Some users claim that the card’s fans ratchet up to full speed, while other report the opposite problem, where the fans slow down to 30% regardless of load. People have also taken to Reddit to discuss the issue, where users report experiencing an issue where the fan speed sets itself to manual every time a new game is launched.

AMD acknowledged the problem over the weekend and said that it would publish a hotfix today. AMD's new Radeon Software drivers place a huge emphasis on stability, so this is a little disappointing. But given that there's no such thing as entirely bug-free software, it's nice to see that AMD is at least aware of the problem and is working to fix it.

In the meantime, you can roll back to the previous Catalyst drivers if you’re really worried about cooking your card. Still, that’s not something that is likely to happen as modern GPUs are designed to throttle themselves when temperatures exceed a safe ceiling. In fact, a few users noticed the fan speed issue because of the resulting performance throttling.
