AMD Radeon R9 285 graphics cards from two add-in card partners announced

Add-in card partners, PowerColor and Sapphire, have announced their wares based on the new AMD Radeon R9 285. This new addition to the AMD R9 series plugs the gap between the R9 280X and the R9 270X GPUs.

Sapphire was the first to announce four Radeon R9 285 graphics cards. In its lineup, there are two Dual-X edition variants, followed by another pair of ITX Compact edition cards. The Sapphire Dual-X graphics cards have two versions; the Dual-X R9 285 2GB GDDR5 and the Dual-X R9 285 2GB GDDR5 OC. The first card has specifications that mirror a stock AMD Radeon R9 285; it has a clock speed of 918MHz, and its video memory modules operate at 5500MHz. The OC version features an overclocked R9 285 GPU, with a maximum clock speed of 965MHz. Its 2GB GDDR5 video memory have also been overclocked to operate at 5600MHz.

The Compact ITX edition cards are meant for small form factor gaming systems; they are the R9 285 2GB GDDR5 ITX Compact OC edition and the R9 285 2GB GDDR5 ITX Compact edition. In contrast with  the Dual-X R9 285 series, the Compact ITX cards are about a third shorter in length. They also differ in terms of video connectivity options; the Compact ITX cards feature a pair of mini-DisplayPort ports, a HDMI port, and a dual-link DVI-I port. Instead of mini-DisplayPort interfaces, the Dual-X cards each have a DisplayPort port, a HDMI port and a pair of dual-link DVI ports. The Compact ITX cards have lower clock speeds, however, the R9 285 2GB Compact ITX OC edition has a clock speed of 928MHz that is higher than the Dual-X R9 285.

PowerColor has followed suit with its single offering, the TurboDuo R9 285 2GB GDDR5 OC. This card operates at a clock speed of 945MHz but its video buffer operates at the default frequency of 5500MHz. The new AMD R9 285 cards support improved AMD CrossFire and AMD TrueAudio technologies. In addition, the cards also support the upcoming DirectX 12, as well as the AMD Mantle technology.
