Original article below (written July 29, 2016):

AMD first unveiled the Radeon RX 460 and RX 470 at the PC Gaming Show at E3 in June, but CEO Lisa Su stopped short of revealing crucial details like specifications and availability dates. Well, we can stop wondering about that as AMD has finally taken wraps off the hardware powering its lower-end Polaris cards.

While the Radeon RX 480 has shown itself capable of handling games at resolutions beyond 1080p, and is intended to put VR-capable hardware in the hands of the masses, the Radeon RX 460 and RX 470 have more modest ambitions.

As we found out at E3, the Radeon RX 460 is targeted at less demanding e-sports titles like Dota 2, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, and even Overwatch. According to AMD, we can expect over 100fps in these titles at HD resolutions at High settings (or around 90fps in more taxing games), which would make it around 1.2x to 1.3x faster than the Radeon R7 260X.

The RX 460 is also a compact, single-fan card, and AMD hopes it’ll enable better performance in smaller form factor systems and even notebooks. It even lacks any power connectors, so it was really designed with power efficiency in mind.

On the other hand, the Radeon RX 470 aims to deliver smooth frame rates at 1080p resolutions in more demanding games like Rise of the Tomb Raider and Hitman. One of AMD’s more impressive claims is the card’s ability to push up to 107fps in Doom at 1080p and Ultra settings, but we’ll have to wait till we get a review unit to test those claims.

Finally, here’s a quick overview of the cards’ specifications:

The Radeon RX 460 is expected to be available on 8 August, while the Radeon RX 470 will be available earlier on 4 August. We’ve no word on pricing at this point in time.
