AMD Loses Market Share to NVIDIA and Intel

Despite its APUs being used in the latest Microsoft and Sony game consoles, AMD is very much a company under fire. Its GPU offerings have not been very competitive of late and on the desktop front it faces fierce competition from Intel and a declining PC market.

According to Jon Peddie Research, AMD's market share fell 10.4% while NVIDIA's and Intel's climbed 3.4% and 5.1% respectively. Despite AMD's new Volcanic Islands GPUs, NVIDIA's high-end solutions are very competitive as it offers better thermals and acoustics. Intel, on the other hand, have been very aggressive with its new integrated GPU solutions. That said, AMD still maintains a slight lead over NVIDIA with its 18.3% market share versus the competitor's 16.6%. Intel, with its integrated GPUs, is the leader with just over 65%.

These sentiments were also shared by our readers as can be seen from our Tech Awards Reader's Choice results where AMD is battered by both Intel and NVIDIA.

Additionally, AMD has been very quiet on the mobile front. If you look at notebooks in the market today, the vast majority of them are running some sort of an NVIDIA GPU from the GeForce GTX 700M series.

Finally, another reason for this is that AMD's new Kaveri APUs have failed to gain traction amongst users and OEMs.
