AMD has hinted that it could be bringing its FreeSync variable refresh rate technology to living rooms. At a conference call hosted by the Radeon Technologies Group (RTG) to celebrate its one-year anniversary, company representatives all but confirmed that FreeSync would be coming to televisions, although it was hesitant about sharing further details.

To be specific, Raja Koduri, Senior Vice President and Chief Architect at RTG, said that they were working “with the entire display community on getting FreeSync to more places”. There was even a specific mention of “FreeSync TVs”, although that was about as far as AMD was willing to go with regard to its plans in this area.

FreeSync is AMD’s equivalent of NVIDIA’s G-Sync technology, and serves a similar purpose to eliminate screen tearing and enable a smoother experience.

The technology is currently available on over 100 PC monitors, but none of these are actually the right size for living room viewing. That said, one advantage FreeSync has over G-Sync is its support for the HDMI standard, which could prove useful if and when it arrives on TVs.

This also has interesting implications for consoles, which are currently powered by mostly AMD GPUs. The possible advent of FreeSync displays would cement AMD’s hold on the console graphics market, creating greater incentive for manufacturers to use AMD GPUs and bringing benefits like more fluid gameplay to console players.
