AMD expands availability of Wraith cooler to FX-8350 and FX-6350 CPUs

AMD FX-8350

AMD’s new Wraith cooler offers better cooling and quieter operation than previous stock coolers that were bundled with its processors. Since its launch with AMD’s FX- 8370 CPU earlier this year, the cooler has also been made available with the A10-7890K, AMD’s latest flagship APU. Starting today, AMD has expanded the list of processors that will ship with the Wraith cooler to include its eight-core FX-8350 and six-core FX-6350 unlocked processors.

The two FX CPUs also promise significant performance improvements in DirectX 12, and it’s possible that their extra cores could serve them well when paired with the new API. DirectX 12 can utilize multiple threads more efficiently than its predecessors, and AMD says that the FX-6350 saw a 67% improvement in performance after switching from DirectX 11 to 12 (the system was paired with a Radeon R9 390X), with the FX-8350 also posting similar performance gains.

AMD also pointed out that HTC recommends the FX-8350 for the Vive, and even claimed that the FX-6350 is powerful enough to use with the Oculus Rift. But whatever the case, it’s still difficult to recommend these AMD processors over their Intel counterparts to someone looking to build a VR-ready system.

The good news is that system builders on a budget will now have access to the improved Wraith cooler via a wider range of processors, but if you’re considering an AMD CPU for VR or other demanding titles, you probably want to wait for Zen to arrive.

The AMD FX-8350 and FX-6350 are now available for US$169.99 and US$129.99 respectively.
