AMD announces the FirePro S9300 X2, a dual Fiji card for enterprises

AMD has revealed a new enterprise-class GPU designed for use in deep learning machines, data processing and analytics, and development platforms used in exascale computing. The FirePro S9300 X2 features dual Fiji GPUs and High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) on a single PCB, and is the world’s fastest single-precision GPU accelerator according to AMD.

The new card is the enterprise equivalent of the Radeon Pro Duo, the consumer-oriented dual-Fiji card that debuted last month. The FirePro S9300 X2 boasts a whopping 13.9 TFLOPS in single-precision floating point computation, and has a total aggregate memory bandwidth of 1,024GB/s.

NVIDIA may have updated the Quadro M6000 with 24GB of VRAM, but the FirePro S9300 X2 – as the only professional GPU on the market that features HBM (2 x 4GB) – still trumps it in terms of sheer bandwidth.

However, one quirk is that while AMD may have built a card that delivers far better single-precision performance than any other enterprise card, its dual-precision performance is a lot more modest at just 0.8 TFLOPS. In fact, some of AMD’s other cards, like the FirePro S9170, offer up to 3x the double-precision performance.

As a result, the FirePro S9300 X2 is a highly-specialized product for applications that require unparalleled single-precision performance. It is already being featured in the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment (CHIME), a radio telescope that collects data which will be used to create a map of cosmic structure over the largest volume of the universe ever observed. This clearly requires an immense amount of rendering capability, and CHIME utilizes a cluster of the FirePro S9300 X2 to render the collected data in real time.

The FirePro S9300 begins shipping this quarter and will cost US$5,999.
