If you wanted an Intel-based alternative to the ASUS ROG Strix GL702ZC and its Ryzen 7 1700 (3.0GHz, 16MB L3 cache) processor, you’re in luck. Aftershock has announced its new W-15 Lite gaming notebook, a 15.6-inch laptop that comes with a six-core desktop Intel Core i7-8700 (3.20GHz, 12MB L3 cache) chip.

Intel’s 8th-generation Coffee Lake processors have proven themselves to be fairly significant upgrades over their predecessors. They narrow the gap with AMD’s Ryzen chips in terms of multi-threaded performance, while still maintaining their lead in games.

In fact, Aftershock says the Core i5-8400 that you can also equip the W-15 Lite with is up to 30 per cent faster than the quad-core Core i7-7700HQ (2.80GHz, 6MB L3 cache) found on most gaming laptops today.

Here’s an overview of the base specifications:

  • 15.6-inch 1,920 x 1,080-pixel IPS display
  • Intel Core i5-8400 (2.80GHz, 9MB L3 cache)
  • 8GB DDR4-2400 RAM
  • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB
  • 120GB SSD + 1TB HDD
  • 378 x 267 x 30mm
  • 2.7kg

In addition, you’ll have the option to go for a 120Hz TN panel for a silky smooth gaming experience. The TN panel may not look as good as its IPS counterpart, but most gamers will probably opt for more fluid gameplay over better colors.

But given that the Core i5 and i7 desktop chips the W-15 Lite uses are both 65W parts, cooling is also of paramount importance. To that end, the W-15 Lite is equipped with a dual-fan cooling system and copper heat pipes that Aftershock says should have no trouble keeping the system cool under heavy loads.

Battery life is also another concern for any laptop equipped with desktop-class components, but Aftershock is claiming between 4 and 5 hours of use on its 62Wh battery.

Finally, you’ll be able to customize the laptop’s exterior with a selection of automobile paints or vinyl car wraps to make it truly your own.

Having said that, the most attractive thing about the W-15 Lite may be its sub-S$2,000 price tag, which sees the notebook starting at just S$1,725.
