Microsoft has announced that 4G LTE is coming to its Surface 3 2-in-1 hybrid. In our review of the Surface 3, we noted how the Surface 3’s light weight and great battery life made it highly portable. With the new 4G LTE capabilities, this new iteration of the Surface 3 will be even more mobile than before as users will be able to access the Internet as long as they have cellular reception.

It comes as no surprise then that the 4G LTE-capable Surface 3 is initially targeted at business customers. As growing numbers of business professionals work on-the-go, they will definitely appreciate being untethered from Wi-Fi and no longer having to worry about overcrowded Wi-Fi hotspots in business lounges.

The new device has already been on sale in Japan for two weeks through Y!Mobile. A wider rollout is coming as Microsoft works to make it available to business customers in Europe through partner operators. Business customers in Germany and the UK will be able to purchase the improved Surface 3 on 3 July, while customers in France and Spain can do so at a later date. Partner operators include the likes of Deutsche Telekom in Germany, Orange Business Services in France, O2 in the UK, and Movistar in Spain.

Following availability to business customers, Microsoft is eventually looking to offer the 4G LTE Surface 3 at retail and through commercial resellers in France, Germany, the UK, and the US in the coming weeks.

Microsoft is also bumping up the RAM on its 64GB 4G LTE Surface 3 to 4GB, the same as that on the 128GB model. Both 64GB and 128GB models with 4GB of RAM will be available to business customers.

This is definitely a welcome change as 2GB of RAM is hardly enough when it comes to dealing with multiple productivity apps and browser tabs, something that business customers will arguably find themselves doing quite often.

Microsoft didn’t release details on whether the 4G LTE Surface 3 would be coming to regions closer to home, but we’ll update when we know more.
