Scientists at the Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute (HHI) have developed a new means of high-speed data transmission using LED lightbulbs. The technology uses standard off-the-shelf LED room lights for data transmission.
The technology transmits data using colored LEDs to flicker faster than the human eye can perceive. While it won't replace your standard router, due to its strict line-of-sight requirement, the technology could find a home in places like hospitals where radio-based wireless technology can cause problems for sensitive equipment.
The technology has actually been around for a while (since at least 2008), however initial LED data transmission rates were limited to about 800 Mbps. The newly developed technology at HHI has seen transmission speeds in laboratory experiments of over 1 Gbps, with theoretical speeds of up to 3 Gbps possible.
