Zotac GeForce 9600 GT DP - Ports for Every Occasion

By Kenny Yeo - 7 Oct 2008

Conclusion

Ports Don't Come Free

We are not going to sugar-coat this, the Zotac GeForce 9600 GT DP is rather expensive. At a recommended retail price of US$159 (S$225), it is considerably more costly than most other GeForce 9600 GT cards - the cheapest we found was going for only S$145. Performance-wise, the Zotac GeForce 9600 GT DP can hardly be faulted. It is neither outstanding nor terribly bad, just plain decent. However, as our overclocking tests have shown, it does have ample overhead for overclocking, which should give it sufficient boost to go toe-to-toe with the speed demons of the 9600 GT range.

Evidently, those extra ports come at a price, and it is really up to you to decide whether or not you need them. Let's face it, connectors for one video output format to another are readily available, if not already bundled with most graphics cards and it would be far cheaper to use them rather than get a custom graphics card for that. Arguably, only the DisplayPort and to a lesser extent, the HDMI on this Zotac has no ready adapter. Also, only two of those ports can be used simultaneously.

The Zotac GeForce 9600 GT DP offers decent performance and a host of video output options, pity about the price.

Additionally, DisplayPort is still very much in its infancy and many monitors today still lack the interface. It is going to take some time before it becomes adopted on a widespread scale. Hence, it is probably more likely that the GeForce 9600 GT will made obsolete before DisplayPort starts appearing on displays as standard interfaces. Therefore, besides the novelty and versatility of the Zotac GeForce 9600 GT DP, this card is not really something that we'll recommend strongly.
