Inside the VAIO Z
The slightly heavier weight (1.48kg) of the VAIO VGN-Z17GN is due to the the full Intel Centrino 2 experience on the inside, along with a very nice set of components. For a start, it uses an Intel Core 2 Duo P9500 (2.53GHz) processor, which is one of the new high end processors in Intel's current line up. Instead of using the good ol' DDR2 modules, Sony has thrown in 4GB DDR3 of RAM for even more speed.
Sony's also one of the first to bring switchable graphics that's included on the Centrino 2 platform to its notebooks (well the Z series). So you might be pleasantly surprised to find that the notebook uses NVIDIA's GeForce 9300M GS discrete GPU when running on "Speed" mode and switches to the integrated Intel X4500 on "Stamina" mode for better power efficiency. We'll find out exactly how much more in our next section. Lastly, rounding it all up is a high resolution 13.1-inch wide screen that has a rather high 1600 x 9000 resolution, and which looks gorgeous on the eyes with its vibrant display.
