3DMark03 is slowly on its way out from being able to portray the true power of the latest graphics cards for its coding and test routines revolve around older graphics technology and representation. While we are not completely dumping it just yet, this traditional benchmark relates to somewhat dated game engines and render methods. With the different GPU architectures of ATI and NVIDIA though, you can clearly see that it favors the NVIDIA's implementation better.
The clock speed differential between the GeForce 7800 GTX 256MB and 512MB versions alone greatly contribute to their performance delta seen here, which is unlike the minuscule difference between the ATI Radeon X1800 and X1900 graphics cards where the graphics engine and clock speeds are mostly similar. With only the last test of the 3DMark03 suite having some form of DirectX 9 coding (just a couple of shader programs), there is little to be gained out of the Radeon X1900 series in older game genres. Things are going to look a lot different in newer benchmarks, with 3DMark05 up next.
