Uniformity Of Display

For desktop computer monitors, the 24-inch form factor has been gaining popularity as prices have dropped into more affordable sub-$400 levels. Thanks to this momentum, we've been recently testing a number of these monitors in our test labs such as the Philips Brilliance Moda line-up, launched earlier last year in August.

Intended to be a premium range of LED monitors, the Moda is designed with modern aesthetics in mind. Its rounded corners and black bezel are complimented by a die cast aluminum base while a glossy finish and touch controls add another layer of sophistication to this product.

Visuals are provided on a 23.6-inch TFT LCD panel, with LED backlighting and a host of patented Philips technologies employed to ensure high quality imagery. SmartKolor is intended to boost the RGB gain of the monitor for better color, while SmartContrast is supposed to ensure an impactful picture. Interestingly, Philips has also equipped the Moda with SmartTxt, a technology intended to make reading words on the monitor easier for users. The SmartTxt algorithm was thoroughly put to the test when reading PDF documents, though we didn’t notice a great discernible difference in the readability of text on the Moda versus other monitors.

When subjected to our battery of tests, the Moda fared well. Its performance through the screen uniformity tests was most impressive as the monitor showed just a couple of percentage points of variance even at the highest brightness settings. The uniformity of picture was also evidenced when we tested the screen with Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride, with the Moda displaying even colors throughout.

A measured black luminescence of 0.35 cd/m2 puts the Moda on even footing with other monitors, but we found black color representation to be slightly muted. Overall though, the Moda has a warm tone and good reproduction of color. Skin tones and the lush greenery were dutifully rendered when viewing Lord of the Rings on DVD.

On the whole, the 23.6-inch Moda is worth its S$349 price tag. An extremely good-looking monitor, its performance was admirable although better black representation would have pushed it into the territory of excellence. Achieving uniform display with LED lighting is no mean feat and Philips should be commended for their efforts on that front.
