Test Setup

For the MSI RX1800XT-VT2D512E, we used our usual test system based on an nForce4 SLI motherboard from ASUS, the A8N-SLI Deluxe. Obviously, the processor had to be from AMD. We choose an Athlon 64 3500+ CPU and then we proceeded to install 2 x 512MB of DDR400 RAM from Corsair. Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 1 was installed on a Seagate 7200.7 SATA hard drive. This system was then updated with DirectX 9.0c.

So far, we have reviewed quite a few Radeon X1800 XT cards, of which the ones from ASUS, HIS and Gigabyte ware overclocked to 700/1600MHz. MSI's RX1800XT-VT2D512E was a normal Radeon X1800 XT though, meaning that its core was at 625MHz and the memory was at 1500MHz. All ATI cards were installed with Catalyst 5.11 drivers and the following benchmarks were tested:

  • Futuremark 3DMark05 Pro (version 120)
  • Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay (version 1.1)
  • Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell 3: Chaos Theory (version 1.3)
  • Quake 4
