Test Setup

After updating our MSI K8N Diamond Plus to the new BIOS (version 1.22), the integrated PCI Express switch onboard the card was detected correctly and we went about testing the MSI card. In addition to the K8N Diamond Plus, we had an Athlon 64 FX-55 (2.6GHz) processor and up to 1GB of DDR400 low latency system memory in dual channel mode. The SATA hard drive used was a Seagate 7200.7 while the operating system was as usual, Microsoft's Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 2 and DirectX 9.0c.

Obviously, the MSI was compared directly to the NVIDIA reference GeForce 7950 GX2 board, along with a few other cards and configurations of a similar class. Here are the cards tested and the driver versions used:

  • MSI NX7950GX2-T2D1GE (ForceWare 91.29)
  • NVIDIA GeForce 7950 GX2 1GB (ForceWare 91.29)
  • NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GTX 512MB (ForceWare 84.21)
  • NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GT 256MB - SLI (ForceWare 84.21)
  • ATI Radeon X1900 XTX 512MB (Catalyst 6.5)

The following benchmarks were used:

  • Futuremark 3DMark05 Pro (version 120)
  • Futuremark 3DMark06 Pro (version 102)
  • Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay (version 1.1)
  • Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell 3: Chaos Theory (version 1.3)
  • F.E.A.R
  • Quake 4
