Test Setup

Test Setup

The following test bed configuration will be used in this review to assess the performance of the MSI K8NGM2-FID in comparison with some of the competition in the market. The two motherboards used as comparison would be the WinFast 6150K8MA-8EKRS, a GeForce 6150/nForce 430 board like the K8NGM2-FID and the Gigabyte GA-K8N51GMF-9, a board based on the GeForce 6100/nForce 430 combo.

  • AMD Athlon 64 3500+ (2.2GHz)
  • 2 x 512MB Corsair DDR400 @ 6-3-3 CAS 2.5 CMD 1T
  • Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 80GB SATA hard disk drive (one single NTFS partition)
  • GeForce 6150/6100 IGP 64MB UMA frame buffer with TurboCache
  • NVIDIA ForceWare 81.85
  • nForce4 Package 8.20
  • Microsoft Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 1 (with DirectX 9.0c)

Additional Notes

It is probably important to point out that during our motherboard setup phase, we noticed that the BIOS' "Optimal Defaults" option incorrectly sets the Hypertransport (HTT) speed to 400MHz for both the "CPU to NB" and "NB to SB" selections. The correct HTT values should have been 1GHz (5x) for "CPU to NB" and 800MHz (4x) for "NB to SB". This option was set accordingly for our benchmarking session.

Benchmarks

All tests and comparisons were run on the following list of benchmarks:-

  • BAPco SYSmark 2004
  • Futuremark PCMark04
  • SPECviewperf 8.01
  • Futuremark 3DMark03
  • AquaMark3
