Atomic Revolution

Intel's latest update to its netbook platform certainly changes some things around, but it still lacks needed improvements in the graphics and video playback department. Of course, there's the stopgap solution of having the Broadcom Crystal HD companion chip to handle the needs of the HD playback, but it doesn't exactly speak well about the platform
if it requires yet again an external solution to address this issue. NVIDIA's ION platform filled this gap marvelously, allowing for light gaming and HD playback, but at the cost of extra power consumption, of course.

Of course, it may be argued that the Intel Atom platform isn't meant for HD playback anyway, seeing as how most of the screens are capped at a 1024 x 600 resolution, and we quite agree with this point. However, that's not to say that it won't be used as such by consumers, especially if the HD format becomes the default playback option for most users. HD video playback issue aside, Intel definitely deserves the kudos on the updated Intel Atom platform, as its power saving features definitely match up to our expectations.

The ASUS Eee PC 1005PE takes advantage of the new Atom platform, trimming down on the weight by using a slightly smaller battery while tweaking and updating the design. You'll find a slightly thinner netbook, with an improved keyboard, while still keeping the look and feel of the "Seashell" design. There's much to like about the unit, especially the almost six-hour battery life, and 1.27kg weight. Price wise, it's yet to be announced, but expect it to fall within the usual ASUS price range for its Eee PC netbook series.

If it's a long lasting netbook that you require, then the ASUS Eee PC 1005PE will get that job done.
