Test Setup

Our benchmarking was done on an Intel based system equipped with an Intel D975XBX 'Bad Axe' motherboard and an Intel Core 2 Duo E6700 processor (2.66GHz). Installed too were 2GB of low latency DDR2-800 HyperX memory from Kingston. A Seagate 7200.7 SATA hard drive completed the system, with Windows XP Professional running on it, patched with Service Pack 2 and DirectX 9.0c.

Gigabyte's Radeon HD 2600 XT is the first GDDR3 version of the HD 2600 XT that we have received that comes at its standard clock speeds. Our previously tested cards included a GDDR4 version from Sapphire with higher memory clock (2200MHz DDR) and the other GDDR3 card, the XpertVision Sonic had its memory overclocked to 1600MHz DDR. Hence, the Gigabyte should give us a pretty accurate idea of how a typical GDDR3 Radeon HD 2600 XT will perform. All these ATI cards were running 8.38 drivers. Meanwhile for the NVIDIA cards, the GeForce 8600 GTS and GT were added for reference's sake, though the GeForce 8600 GTS is generally a class faster than the Radeon HD 2600 XT in the benchmarks. These NVIDIA cards were on ForceWare 158.19 drivers. The following benchmarks were tested:

  • Futuremark 3DMark05 (ver. 120)
  • Futuremark 3DMark06 (ver. 102)
  • Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory (ver 1.3)
  • F.E.A.R
  • Company of Heroes (ver 1.3)
  • Quake 4 (ver 1.2)
