Despite the optimization tricks ATI has pulled to close the gap between its cards and NVIDIA's in Quake 4, the GeCube Radeon X1800 GTO still fell behind the GeForce 7600 GT by a fair amount without anti-aliasing. Surprisingly, the GeForce 7800 GT also allowed the higher clocked GeForce 7600 GT to seize the lead as the fastest NVIDIA representative in the comparison (without antialiasing). However, it was unable to make up the slight gap with the more powerful (and more expensive) Radeon X1800 XL.

Similar to what we had noticed in 3DMark05, the situation changed once anti-aliasing was enabled. The ATI contingent caught up gradually and at a resolution of 1600 x 1200, the GeCube had the last laugh in beating the GeForce 7600 GT by around five frames per second. Meanwhile, normal service was restored with the GeForce 7800 GT leading the 7600 GT.
