Test Setup

All the benchmarks and tests were conducted on an AMD Athlon 64 system. This included an ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe motherboard, installed with an Athlon 64 3500+ processor and running in dual channel mode, 2 x 512MB DDR400 RAM from Corsair. The operating system installed on a Seagate 7200.7 SATA drive was Windows XP Professional updated with Service Pack 1. The latest DirectX 9.0c was also used to ensure compatibility with all the games tested.

The GeCube GC-X1800XTD-VIE3 sticks to the default clock speeds (625/1500MHz DDR) found in the reference design. This is similar to the PowerColor card in the comparison. The ASUS EAX1800XT TOP on the other hand is clocked higher at 700/1600MHz DDR and should prove to be too fast for the other cards. All these ATI cards used Catalyst 5.11 drivers for the tests. The following benchmarks were tested:

  • Futuremark 3DMark05 Pro (version 120)
  • Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay (version 1.1)
  • Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell 3: Chaos Theory (version 1.3)
  • Quake 4
