The BlackBerry Storm 9500

Multimedia

Listen, Snap, Shoot

Features-wise, however, the BlackBerry Storm is a different story altogether. Heavy-duty media users will certainly dig its multimedia functions. The Storm, like its recent comrades such as the Bold and Curve, has full multimedia playback capabilities via a video and music player, which will certainly entertain you on long journeys and trips.

The Storm is also equipped with a 3.2-megapixel camera sensor that snaps both still and video images. When we tested the camera quality by snapping some shots in the day, images turned out sharper and clearer than that of the iPhone. How's that for a phone that's primarily a business oriented phone?

Snapping pictures at night however is another story altogether. Images turned out pixilated, and the pictures were mostly underexposed. In other words, this phone isn't the right partner to bring along if you want to snap pictures in a nightclub. In any case several cameraphones aren't capable of mastering this harsh aspect, so it's just a point of note to set your expectations, but it's certainly not something of real concern. If you did want to snap good photos in dark environments, you should be relying upon smartphones that specialize in camera functionality, or get a good dedicated camera. What the BlackBerry Storm does is juggle the multimedia aspects well for their first-ever touchscreen device.

Images taken with the onboard 3.2-megapixel camera were of acceptable quality thanks to the autofocus function on this unit.

With the Storm sporting a 3.5mm earphone jack, audio enthusiasts can plug in their own set of earphones. Users will be happy to know that the music playback quality is good as we found vocals from a Jason Mraz track sounding clear and distinct.

With the upcoming BlackBerry App World, expected to hit our shores sometime this year, you'll be able to truly flood your phone with countless media functions. For the uninitiated, the App World is BlackBerry's answer to the Apple App Store. Like its rivals, the App World lets you purchase and download phone widgets into your handset, allowing you to customize it to suit your needs and preferences.
