3DMark06 would not recognize the new GPU on the Radeon HD 2900 XT and would subsequently freeze at startup when gathering information about your system. To get around this problem and run the benchmark properly, you have to do the following steps: Right click on the 3DMark06 icon and select Properties. In the dialog box, find the Run line and add "-nosysteminfo" at the end.

As you can see from the benchmark figures below, the Radeon HD 2900 XT approached the scores the GeForce 8800 GTX without anti-aliasing, lagging the GTX by around 4% to 8%. Meanwhile it was more than 10% faster than the GeForce 8800 GTS. Unfortunately, the situation was reversed when anti-aliasing was enabled, with the Radeon ending up closer to the GTS. Despite its impressive memory bandwidth numbers, it seems that the new Radeon may not be performing where it matters. Perhaps more mature drivers will see performance gains here.
