The ASUS PhysX P1 GRAW Edition 128MB

Installation Quirks and Test Setup

There have been some reported issues of the PhysX hardware not being detected in some cases after the drivers were installed and an extra reboot was needed for everything to work properly. Well, in our case, we ran into some hitches on our first attempt. On our test bed consisting of an MSI K8N Diamond Plus motherboard, the ASUS PhysX P1 was detected by the system as a PCI Modem (we tried all available PCI slots) and no matter what we did, we didn't manage to install the drivers, including the latest 2.4.3 from the Ageia website. The driver installation software would insist that no PhysX hardware was detected and refuse to complete the installation.

We decided to change the motherboard instead and on two occasions (ECS and ASUS motherboards), we were successful. In both cases, the PhysX hardware was seen as PCI Device and the driver installation went without any problems after that. It could be that the MSI motherboard had difficulty recognizing the PhysX card but whatever the case, we got it working on the following (older) test system in the end:

  • AMD Athlon 64 3500+ CPU
  • ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe motherboard
  • 1GB DDR400 Corsair RAM
  • ASUS EN7900GTX 512MB
  • Seagate 7200.7 80GB SATA hard drive

The operating system used was Microsoft's Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 1 and updated to DirectX 9.0c. ForceWare 84.21 drivers were used while the PhysX driver was 2.4.3 Beta 1, which supposedly enhances the performance of the PhysX hardware (a probable response to the issue of lower frame rates with PPU enabled in games like GRAW).
